The career and first cooperation of conductor H.Topikyan started in 1973 when he led the Chamber Choir of the State Radio and TV of Armenia.
In 1969 Harutyun Topikyan graduated from the Romanos Melikyan Music College in the orchestra department. (class of V. Ketenjyan).
In 1973 he graduated from the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory in the orchestra department (class of L. Chunguryan).
In 1974 he worked at the Music School named after Konstantin Sarajyan.
In 1979 he founded the Armenian Song Chamber Choir of radio and television and recorded 4 CDs at the initiative of "Melodiya" company.
In 1982, H. Topikyan was awarded the State Prize of the Lenin Communist Union of Armenia for conducting the Armenian Song Chamber Choir of the Radio and Television.
From 1983 to 1991 Topikyan conducted the Choir Komitas of the Yerevan State University which had numerous successful performances both locally and internationally.
In 1987 the Komitas Choir of Yerevan State University competed with 19 choirs and took the first place at the prestigious Uventus all-union competition in Kaunas, Lithuania.
In 1991 Maestro Topikyan became one of the organizers of the East-West United Song Festival Bridges of Song Tallinn-91 (Estonia), where he was honoured to conduct 20.000-singers performing the Patriarchal Ode.
From 1991 to 1994 Maestro Topikyan reorganized the Choir Gusan founded by Armenian composer Barsegh Kanachyan in Beirut/Lebanon taking it to a new level of Performing Arts.
In 1996 Maestro Harutyun Topikyan, under the patronage of Catholicos Garegin I, successfully founded the Yerevan State Chamber Choir, the primary mission of which is to record and perform the entire choral heritage of Komitas. Later, until 2004 the Choir continued its activities thanks to the patronage of Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II.
In 1997 YSCC led by H. Topikyan succeeded at the "International Song Festival" in Ravenna, Italy.
In 1998 within the framework of the Armenian Cultural Days in Germany, YSCC under H. Topikyan's leadership, received a brilliant acceptance, performing the restored liturgy of Komitas, as well as the works of Tigran Mansuryan in Bonn, Halle, Wittenberg, Magdeburg, then in Syria and Lebanon.
In 1999 at the International Music Festival in Bergen (Norway), H. Topikyan directed YSCC, performing with world-famous musicians viola player Kim Kashkashyan and saxophonist Jan Garbarek.
In 2000 the 3rd Annual Armenian Music Awards in Glendale (USA) the CD "Songs by Komitas Vardapet" which was recorded by the Yerevan State Chamber Choir was granted the Best Traditional Album award. Many recordings of the Choir conducted by Topikyan archived in the fund of the Public Radio of Armenia.
In 2001 on the occasion of the 1700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity in Armenia, H. Topikyan conducted concerts with the La Scala Theater Philharmonic Orchestra (artistic director Ricardo Muti).
2000-2002 Harutyun Topikyan together with Winfried Tolly led the Frankfurter Kantorei & YSCC in Armenia and Germany. During the performance, the composition "I confess with faith" (by Nerses Shnorhali) written by Tigran Mansurian for the voice and viola men's choir was presented.
In 2003, at the Palaces of St. Petersburg Festival, H. Topikyan together with YSCC, was honored to present the new anthem of the city. In the same year, he performed with the band within the framework of the composer Benjamin Britten Festival in Armenia.
In 2005 H. Topikyan headed YSCC at the Hallische Musiktage International Festival in Halle, Germany.
In 2006, he performed with the band at the D'ile De France International Festival.
In 2007, by the invitation of the Syrian Arab Republic government, Armenian music was performed by YSCC led by Topikyan in Aleppo, Latakia and Damascus.
In 2008 the band under Topikyan's leadership participated in the Yerevan-Moscow-Sushi-Bethlehem telethon.
In 2009 on the օccasion of the 140th anniversary of Komitas, H. Topikyan gave numerous concerts with his choir in Yerevan, as well as in the regions of Armenia presenting almost all the choir works of the master.
In 2010 on the 50th anniversary of the Virgo Lauretana Festival held in Loreto, YSCC presented Komitas legacy live in more than 50 countries around the world.
Since 2012 – founder, artistic director and conductor of the The Sebastians Choir of teachers of the Mkhitar Sebastatsi Educational Complex. The Choir performs in the functioning and non-functioning churches, in the areas of other monuments and museums, in rural and urban squares, in concert halls, promoting the creation of educational choirs.
In 2013 maestro Topikyan was awarded the Honorary Title of Honored Artist of the Republic of Armenia.
Since 2014 he has become a member of an NGO called Association of Armenian Choir Conductors.
In 2015 Harutyun Topikyan started a collaboration with jazz pianist Tigran Hamasayan, recording the album "Luys i Luso" (Light from the Light) together with ECM records. Then, he goes on concert tours in a number of European countries, in the cities of Turkey and Georgia as well as in the cities of Western Armenia.
In 2018 YSCC under the direction of the maestro, releases the CD "Choral pieces by Willy Weiner" by composer Willie Weiner.
In 2019 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Komitas, YSCC on the initiative of Harutyun Topikyan presented seven concerts ("Komitas and Us") where he's 220 songs were performed.
Maestro Harutyun Topikyan often had collaborations with young contemporary composers and as well as contributions to the presentation of their choral compositions of. For his significant contribution to arts and culture, Maestro Topikyan was repeatedly granted with state awards to mention just a few: the Medal of Appreciation from the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, two Gold Medals from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Armenia, and the "Yerevan" Medal from Yerevan Municipality.
